After many repeated requests for my time and attention, I like to think that I mean it when I speak those words to my children. But honestly… I don’t.
It’s more likely that “maybe later” actually means:
“I don’t want to do that, and I am hoping you will forget.”
“I’m not sure I have the energy to give to that activity.”
“I would rather avoid the conflict of a direct answer, so I am vague.”
You probably parent better than I do and don’t use those words. But I wonder how many times we give a “maybe later” response to the pressing needs within our church. You know, the needs beyond week-to-week sermon preparation and ministry execution.
How often do we redirect attention from visionary leadership, strategic planning, and staff alignment because we know that engagement requires more attention and energy than we have to give?
What if this season of emergence from COVID-19 restrictions is the “later” and God “may be” giving us room to work on what matters?
